Civic participation in cycling projects – opportunities and limits for civic participation

Residents generally know the local routes, challenges and circumstances in their neighbourhoods quite well. At the same time, it is often residents who protest against redesigning street environments, especially when they are informed too late of upcoming changes. How can local authorities involve and use residents and their knowledge at an early stage? How can communication training and digital tools like online participation processes, visualizations or even the preparation of a digital twin support local authorities in developing participation and communication processes? How can a bicycle referendum strengthen civic participation?
